2002 Scholarship Winners

Division I

Kristin Pearson of Ursuline Academy has been awarded the Division I Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2002.  Kristin is the daughter of Robert and Judith Pearson of Mason, Ohio.  Kristin receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments. Kristin graduated in the top 5% in her class with a four year grade point average of 4.350.  She plans to attend either the University of Dayton or the Air Force Academy to major in International Relations.

Kristin was a member of many school and community related organizations such as Student Council Service Representative, Mason Library Teen Board, Habitat for Humanity Family Advocacy Committee, Nursing Home Volunteer and Cincinnati Zoo Volunteer.  Kristin was an NHS member, a National Merit Commended Scholar, the YMCA Character Award winner, attended the US Air Force Academy Summer Science Seminar, and received numerous awards in foreign language and the sciences. 

Kristin helped lead her team to the 2001 State- Runner-up finish and also played club volleyball for Sports Express.  Kristin was coached by Amie Meyer. 

Division II

Laura Divoky of Southeast High School has been awarded the Division II Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2002.  Laura is the daughter of James and Janet Divoky of Ravenna, Ohio.  Laura receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments. Laura graduated first in her class of 170 with a four year grade point average of 4.0.  She plans to attend the University of Akron to major in Nursing.

Laura was a member of many school and community related organizations such as Student Council, Pep Club, Yearbook, FCCLA, and participated in the OASC Leadership Camp participant.  Laura was an NHS member, Spanish Student of the Month, FCCLA Top Five member, and was the Portage County Teen of the Month.

Laura was first team all-league, first team all-district, and Honorable Mention All-Ohio.  She participated in the OHSVCA Elite Camp, was her league’s Player of the Year and made the Plain Dealer 1st Team.  Laura was coached by Mary Tarka.  Laura played basketball, placed third in a relay at the state track meet, and was named Southeast’s Female Athlete of the Year. 

Division III

Amy Harbolt of River Valley High School has been awarded the Division III Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2002.  Amy is the daughter of Phil and Susie Harbolt of Marion, Ohio.  Amy receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Amy graduated sixth in her class of 136 with a four year grade point average of 4.0.  She plans to attend Indiana Wesleyan University. Amy was a member of many school and community related organizations such as SADD, the German Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.  Amy was an NHS member, Teen of the Month, and had perfect attendance since 1998. 

Amy was first team All-League, All-District, and All-Ohio.  She was named the Fahey Bank Athlete of the Month.  Amy was coached by Jayne Klingel.   Amy played basketball and was a Second-Team All-Conference selection in softball. 

Division IV

Jenny Coletta of Arlington High School has been awarded the Division IV Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2002.  Jenny is the daughter of Donald and Julie Coletta of Arlington, Ohio.  Jenny receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments. Jenny graduated first in her class of 58 with a four year grade point average of 4.0.  Jenny was a National Merit Finalist.  She plans to attend Heidelberg College to major in History / Pre-Law.

Jenny was a member of many school and community related organizations such as Quiz Bowl, Band (captain), Class Treasurer, Choir and taps player for the local VFW.  Jenny was an NHS member, received many band awards (Patrick S. Gilmore Award, US National Award, Trumpet Soloist for the All-County Jazz Band), and was the Red Ribbon Ceremony Outstanding Student. 

Jenny was first team All-League, first team All-District, and honorable mention All-Ohio.  Jenny was the Wendy’s High School Heisman Nominee, team MVP, and league Player of the Year.  Jenny was coached by Vikki Bell.  Jenny was an All-Conference and All-District selection in softball. 


Active Member's Son / Daughter Scholarship

Jennifer Flower of Twinsburg High School has been awarded the Active Member’s Son / Daughter Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2002.  Jennifer is the daughter of John and Patti Matune  of Hudson, Ohio.  John Matune is the head volleyball coach at Twinsburg High School and active OHSVCA member.  He serves as the OHSVCA’s SEI representative to the OHSAA.  Jennifer receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Jennifer graduated fifth in her class of 225 with a four year grade point average of 3.96.  She plans to attend Miami University to major in Zoology / Pre-Medicine.

Jennifer was a member of many school and community related organizations such as Student Government, Church Youth Group, Homecoming and Prom Committee, President of SADD, Yearbook Editor, Pep Club, and Peer Mediation.  Jennifer was an NHS member and was listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Students. 

Jennifer was captain of her volleyball team and was named second team All-League. Jennifer was coached by John Matune.  Jennifer was also captain of the track team.

Nicholas Russo of Elyria High School has been awarded the Active Member’s Son / Daughter Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2002.  Nick is the son of Tom and Carol Russo of Elyria, Ohio.  Carol Russo is the head volleyball coach at Elyria High School and active OHSVCA member.  She serves as the president of the OHSVCA.  Nick receives a $500 award for his academic and athletic accomplishments.

Nick graduated fifth in his class of 395 with a four year grade point average of 4.425.  He plans to attend Mount Union College to major in Economics / Business Administration.

Nick was a member of many school and community related organizations such as Peer Mediation, Spanish Club, Peer Tutoring, Youth 4 Youth, youth baseball coach and umpire, and a United Methodist Church liturgist.  Nick was a member of NHS, National Honor Roll, Scholastic “E”, Gold Tassel winner, a Mount Union Presidential Scholar and the OHSAA Scholar Athlete for Elyria High School.

Nick was a three year letter winner and two year captain of his football team.  He was named All-Lorain County, All-District and team MVP.  Nick was a three year letter winner for the baseball team.  He was named All-LEL, All-Lorain County, was the MVP of the Lorain County All-Star game and was selected to play in the district all-star game at Jacobs Field.
