2009 Scholarship Winners

Division I

MacKenzy Harper of Lebanon School

MacKenzy Harper of Lebanon High School has been awarded the Division I Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2009. MacKenzy is the daughter of Jeffrey and Jennifer Harper of Lebanon, Ohio. MacKenzy receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

MacKenzy is ranked 2nd of 382 with a four year grade point average of 4.293. She plans to attend Auburn University to major in Business/Graphic Design.

MacKenzy was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the Campus Crusade for Christ Hurricane Relief, Art Club, Antioch Youth Group, French National Honor Society, and Future Business Leaders of America. She also serves as the historian for the National Honor Society and Co-President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

 

MacKenzy received the Superintendent’s Award in 2007. All four years of high school she has been on the Honor Roll and received the Principal’s Award. MacKenzy was named Student of the Quarter in 2007, won the Warrior’s Leadership Award in 2007, and placed 2nd in the 2008 Student Art Exhibit.

MacKenzy was a 3rd Team All-Ohio selection in 2008 and an Honorable Mention pick in 2007. She received the Rae Burick Women in Sports Award in 2008. MacKenzy was named the GWOC Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007. She has been named First Team All-District 15 and All-League for the past three seasons. She has also been selected as her team MVP the past 3 seasons.

MacKenzy was coached by Tim Mersch.

The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship is awarded annually to a player from a school in which the coach is an active member of the association. The student-athlete must be in good academic standing with plans to continue her education after high school.

Division II

Kristin Gromes of Fairless High School

Kristin Gromes of Fairless High School has been awarded the Division II Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2009. Kristin is the daughter of Terry and Elizabeth Gromes of Navarre, Ohio. Kristin receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Kristin is ranked 17th of 186 with a four year grade point average of 3.975. She plans to attend Walsh University, Malone University or Mount Union College to major in Pre-Med.

Kristin was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, Drama Club, Prom Committee, Homecoming Committee, Pep Club, Junior Core Team, and Big Sibs. She is the Vice-President of the Marching and Concert Band, Vice-President of 4-H, Secretary/Treasurer of the Key Club and the Student Representative to the Drage Vocational School. Kristin is a member of the Junior Core Team, is a Junior Olympics Referee, tutors, and was an election poll worker. She is very active in her church as a lector, Eucharistic minister, altar server, bell choir member, festival worker and church decorator.

Kristin received the Fairless February Teen of the Month award, was the 2009 Homecoming Queen and is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. She was named Who’s Who in both English and Mathematics and was the HOBY Ambassador and Buckeye Girls State Representative. Kristin received the Art Achievement Award and was named Outstanding Musician (2006), Solo and Ensemble 1 ratings (2005-2009), 1st Chair Wind Ensemble (2008-2009), and is a Section Leader in the Marching Band. In 2008 she received the Thespian Award, Stage Performance Award, and Rising Star Award. In 4-H

Kristin won the Grow ‘Em and Show ‘Em, the Swine Showmanship and is a State Sewing Qualifier.
In 2007 and 2008, Kristin was named All-District 2nd Team and All-County 2nd Team. She was a Pac-7 Honorable Mention pick in 2007 and was the Canton South Rotary All-Star Representative. Kristin is a 4 year letter winner and was also named team captain. She holds the school record for digs and serve receptions. She received many awards at camps at Bowling Green and Mount Union.

Kristin is also a 4 year letter winner in softball where she was named 1st Team All PAC and was the MVP of the State Finals Game in 2007.

Kristin was coached by Jeannie Weisgarber.

Division III

Morgan Ryan of Triad High School

Morgan Ryan of Triad High School has been awarded the Division III Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2009. Morgan is the daughter of David and Cheryl Ryan of Cable, Ohio. Morgan receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Morgan is ranked 4th of 77 with a four year grade point average of 3.987. She plans to attend the Ohio State University to major in Biology.

Morgan was a member of many school and community related organizations such as Student Congress, Yearbook, Ecology Club, Homecoming Committee, Prom Planning, Fundraising and Decorating, Teacher’s Assistant, Relay for Life, and County Honor Club. In 4-H she is a junior leader, Camp CIT, Pork Council member, Junior Fairboard member, Pork Industry Princess and Queen, and Goat Ambassador. She is a nine year member of Girl Scout Troop #818. She also serves as an officer in many clubs including: class (secretary 9 &12 and treasurer 10 & 11), Spanish Club (secretary), FFA (sentinel), and NHS (secretary).

Morgan is a member of the National Honor Society. She has been on the Principal’s List Honor Roll for four years. Morgan has received the following awards: National Honor Roll (11), International Foreign Language Award (10), FFA: Greenhand Degree (9), Star Greenhand (9), Chapter Farmer Degree (10), FFA State Farmer Degree (11), and Girl Scout Leadership Award (9). Morgan has won the following awards in 4-H: FFA Grand Champion Market Gilt (9), Health and Safety Speaking County Regional Winner (9, 10), State Fair Clock Trophy Mentor Project (10), Outstanding of the Day (9, 10), and Representative to State Fair (9, 10, 11).

Morgan was a District 9 1st Team selection in 2008 and played in the District 9 All-Star Match. She was a District 9 2nd Team selection in 2007. Morgan was named Bellefontaine Examiner All-Area 1st team 2006, 2007 and 2008 and was named Springfield News Sun All-Area 2nd Team in 2007 and 2008. She was named 1st Team OHC All-League and 1st Team All-County her junior and senior years. Morgan was a four year varsity letter winner, team captain in 2008, received the Coach’s Award in 2006 and 2008 and the Offensive Fighting Cardinal Award in 2007. She has played club volleyball for the Mad Rivers Juniors and Mid West Elite.

Morgan earned varsity letters in basketball (10), soccer (11), softball (9, 10, 11, 12). She was named Triad Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year her sophomore year. Morgan has received numerous awards in softball including OHC All-league, All-County, Bellefontaine Examiner All-Area, Springfield News Sun All-Area, and her team was regional runner-up finishers for the past three seasons.

Morgan was coached by Liz Carder.

Division IV

Tara Hartings of Marion Local High School

Tara Hartings of Marion Local High School has been awarded the Division IV Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2009. Tara is the daughter of Kevin and Sandy Hartings of Maria Stein, Ohio. Tara receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Tara is ranked 1st of 78 with a four year grade point average of 4.006. She plans to attend Wright State University.

Tara was a member of many school and community related organizations such as 4-H (10 year member), band, JETS, Junior Scholars, student council, and CYO. She went on a mission trip to Haiti, is a server and lector for her church, and is a Prayer Leader of Marion Youth Ministries. Tara also serves as an officer in many organizations: National Honor Society (President), SADD (President), Pep Club (President) Varsity M Club (President), and Class Officer (President as a freshman, Secretary as a sophomore and senior, Vice-President as a junior).

Tara received the band solo and ensemble award, went to the 4-H State Fair in Creative Arts and Best in Class. . In band she has received superior ratings every year. She is a Wendy’s High School All-American, an attendant in the Homecoming Court and has been on the honor roll every semester. She received the following academic awards: English 1 (1st), Advanced Algebra II (1st), Geometry (2nd), Art I (3rd), Health (3rd), Drawing 1 (2nd), English II (3rd), and College English I (1st). Tara also received the Valedictorian/Salutatorian Scholarship from Wright State

Tara was a member of the Marion Local State Volleyball Championship Teams in 2007 and 2008. She is a four year team member and was named captain all four years. Tara was named “Most Inspirational” in 2008. She was also selected as a scholar athlete and was named Student Athlete of the Week.

Tara is also a four year member of both the basketball and softball teams. She was named a team captain in basketball and was MVP of a summer softball tournament.

Tara was coached by Amy Steininger.

The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship is awarded annually to a player from one of its coaching members' schools.  The student-athlete must be in good academic standing with plans to continue her education after high school.

Active Member's Son / Daughter Scholarship

Derek Merriman of Zane Trace High School

Derek Merriman of Zane Trace High School has been awarded the Active Member’s Son / Daughter Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2009. Derek is the son of Andy and Lori Merriman of Kingston, Ohio. Lori Merriman is the head volleyball coach at Westfall High School and active OHSVCA member. She serves on the OHSVCA Board of Trustees. Lori has been an OHSVCA active member for 12 years. Derek receives a $1,000 award for his academic and athletic accomplishments.

Derek will graduate with a four year grade point average of 4.0. He is ranked 1st in his class of 105 students. Derek plans to attend Ohio University and major in Sport Management.

Derek was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, and Homecoming Court. He was the Junior Class President and is the Senior Class Vice-President. Derek is a Football and Basketball Camp Counselor and volunteers for the Biddy League Football and Basketball Programs.

Derek was named Student of the Year in the following subjects: College English I, Physical Science, Spanish II, Physical Education, Trigonometry, Business Software/Documentation, and Chemistry. He is also the class Valedictorian.

Derek is a member of the varsity football, basketball and baseball teams. In football he was a captain and a three year letter winner. He was named Academic All-Ohio, 1st Team All- League Scioto Valley Conference, and Honorable Mention All-Southeast District. In basketball Derek was a captain and a three year letter winner earning Honorable Mention All-League honors. Derek has earned two varsity letters in baseball and he helped his team to the District finals and the conference championship.


                The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association Active Member's Son / Daughter College Scholarships are awarded annually.  The student-athlete must be in good academic standing with plans to continue her education after high school.

Jedd Beros of Buckeye Trail High School

Jedd Beros of Buckeye Trail High School has been awarded the Active Member’s Son / Daughter Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2009. Jedd is the son of Jeff and Lynne Beros of Senecaville, Ohio. Jeff Beros is the head volleyball coach at Buckeye Trail High School and active OHSVCA member. Jeff has been an OHSVCA active member for 20 years. Jedd receives a $1,000 award for his academic and athletic accomplishments.

Jedd will graduate with a four year grade point average of 3.956. He is ranked 4th in his class of 86 students. Jedd plans to attend Ohio University Eastern and major in Education.

Jedd was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the National Honor Society, Prom Committee, 4-H, and St. Jude’s Hospital Research Quiz Bowl Team. He was the Junior Class Vice-President and is the Senior Class Vice-President. Jedd is a graduate of the Guernsey County Youth Leadership Program and an Ohio Energy Project Participant.

Jedd was named Buckeye Trails Wendy’s Heisman Nominee, Student of the Month (9, 10, 11, 12), and to the Principal’s List (9, 10, 11, 12). He is both an Ohio Valley Conference and Pioneer Valley Conference Scholar Athlete (9, 10, 11). Jedd was selected to attend the Guernsey County Youth Leadership Program. He earned the Buckeye Trail Academic Letter, Buckeye Trail Scholar Athlete Award and the Academic All-Warrior award. Jedd earned a superior rating on a woodworking project at the People’s Bank Festival of Learning and was named The Daily Jeffersonian Senior of the Week in November, 2008.

Jedd is a member of the varsity football, basketball and track teams. In football he was a two year varsity letter winner and his team participated in the OHSAA playoffs both years. In basketball Jedd was a co-captain and a two year letter winner earning the Varsity Highest GPA Award. Jedd has earned three varsity letters in track and will compete again this season. He has won the Track Academic Award (9, 10, 11), Most Improved Track Athlete Award (9), Extra Warrior Mile Award (9) and Warrior Pace Setter Award. He is a member of the school record relay teams in the 4 x 800 and shuttle hurdles. His team was District Runner-Up in 2008.

Adam Moses of Lutheran West High School

Adam Moses of Lutheran West High School has been awarded the Active Member’s Son / Daughter Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2009. Adam is the son of Debra Moses and Paul and Dawn Moses of North Olmsted, Ohio. Dawn Moses is the head volleyball coach at Olmsted Falls High School and active OHSVCA member. Dawn serves on the OHSVCA Board of Trustees. Her team won the OHSAA Division I State Championship this past season. Dawn has been an OHSVCA active member for 14 years. Adam receives a $1,000 award for his academic and athletic accomplishments.

Adam will graduate with a four year grade point average of 3.81. He is ranked 14th in his class of 120 students. Adam plans to attend Waynesburg and major in Psychology.

Adam was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the National Honor Society and Student Council. Adam plays AAU basketball. He is an active member of his church Youth Group and went on a mission trip to Puerto Rico.

Adam is a member of the varsity football, basketball and baseball teams. In football he was a three year varsity letter winner and co-captain his senior year. His junior year he was named 2nd Team All-Conference. Adam’s senior year he was named 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-District, and Lutheran High School All-American. In basketball he was a two year varsity letter winner and was named captain in 2008-09. Adam has earned three varsity letters in baseball and will compete again this season. He earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in 2008.

Chelsea Meister of Liberty Center High School

Chelsea Meister of Liberty Center High School has been awarded the Active Member’s Son / Daughter Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2009. Chelsea is the daughter of Brad and Sue Meister of Liberty Center, Ohio. Sue Meister is the head volleyball coach at Liberty Center High School and active OHSVCA member. Sue has been an OHSVCA active member for 6 years. Chelsea receives a $1,000 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Chelsea will graduate with a four year grade point average of 3.943. She is ranked 10th in her class of 125 students. Chelsea plans to attend Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania and major in Psychology/Criminal Justice.

Chelsea was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, SADD, Spanish Club, Future Business Leaders of America (secretary), Yearbook (editor), Tiger Tales (school newspaper), and Liberty Center Athletic Supporters. She was a St. Paul Lutheran Church of Liberty Center Sunday School Teacher and is a North West Ohio Chrysalis Community Member.

Chelsea has made the Principal’s List (10, 11, 12), Honor Roll (9), and was a Global Studies Achievement Award (10). She was the National Financial Literacy Award Winner this past year.

Chelsea is a member of the varsity volleyball, cross country, basketball and softball teams. Chelsea earned the Scholar Athlete Award all four years in every sport. She is a four year letter winner in volleyball. Chelsea was named NWOAL Honorable Mention (2005, 2006), 2nd Team (2007), and 1st Team (2008). She was named 2nd Team All-District 7 in 2008 and team MVP in 2007. She holds the school record for assists. In cross country she is a two year letter winner. Chelsea was named 2nd Team NWOAL and 2nd Team All-District in 2008. In basketball Chelsea is a four year letter winner. She was named NWOAL Honorable Mention (11) and 2nd Team (12) and All-District 7 Honorable Mention (11). In softball Chelsea has earned three varsity letters and will compete again this season. She earned NWOAL Honorable Mention in2008 and was named Team MVP.
